If you need a small diversion today, and want to have some fun, consider heading over to the blog of my friend (and honorary cousin) Juliana Inman, and take her Austen Heroine quiz to find out which of Jane Austen's various heroines you happen to be!
The quiz only takes a few minutes. And if you do so, please make sure to say "hello" to Juliana, and let her know who your Austen heroine alter-ego is!
I took the quiz myself -- yes, that's right. I am secure enough in my masculinity to do this. And it turns out that I am Elinore Dashwood, as is Juliana. She claims that I must have a secret desire to be Emma Thompson -- well, I don't know about that, but I sure never wanted to be married to Kenneth Branagh, I can tell you that much!
Regarding Hawkins House updates, there is quite a bit going on, but little time to write about it. Most likely, I'll be able to get something new posted the first half of next week. In the meantime, have a great weekend, everyone!

I though Austen Heroine was a fictional character written by those darn Bronte sisters; I guess I'm really out in left field.
Dude, you're out there in the tall grass, with the crickets chirpin'.
You're thinking about that old country-rock show that used to come out of Texas back in the late 1970's...
Oh...wait a minute...that was "Austin City Limits". Never mind.
No, no, no. Austen heroine is the feminine of what Willie Nelson used prior to going to pot!! (That was really a bad one, wasn't it?)
Cassie,
If memory serves me right, Willie was a regular on Austin City Limits, long before anyone knew who Willie was.
And regarding your comment, yes. Bad. Very bad. "Going to pot" is clearly where this blog is heading.
And this trend may be irreversible at this point. Totally beyond my control! :-)
Bringing this back to our dear Jane Austen's realm... Welcome to the family, cousin Elinor. Here's a quote from our namesake (from the 1995 movie version of "Sense and Sensibility")on IMDB:
[Edward and Elinor are baiting Margaret, who is playfully hiding]
Edward Ferrars: I wish to check the position of the Nile. My sister tells me it is in South America.
Elinor Dashwood: No. She's quite wrong, for I believe it is in Belgium.
Edward Ferrars: You must be thinking of the Volga.
Margaret: The Volga?
Elinor Dashwood: Of course, the Volga. Which, as you know, starts in...
Edward Ferrars: Vladivostock, and ends in...
Elinor Dashwood: Wimbledon.
Edward Ferrars: Precisely. Where the coffee beans come from.
Margaret: The source of the Nile is in Abyssinia.
Cousin Juliana,
That is too funny! I saw the film, but don't remember all that much of it, though I seem to recall that scene. I need to rent it sometime.
Here's an idea: I vote that we all host a big dinner party someday, where all the guests must behave like campy Victorians. No exceptions! What do you think?
As for me, I think I really need to find a dashing, sea captain -type character to model myself on. Kinda like Russell Crow in Master and Commander. Or maybe a Lt. Sharpe. Some one like that.

I was a sucker for Horatio Hornblower myself - starting in 7th grade. His skill at whist and trigonometry made me ache to study higher math!
Juliana,
Sure. HH is a definite possibility.
Another thought is that we could model the party after the film Impromptu. I am sure you've seen it.
John would be Chopin (of course), you would be Georges Sand, and I would be Franz Liszt -- or whom ever that guy was who was involved with Bernadette Peters. (I just want to be the guy involved with Bernadette Peters!)
On second thought, instead of Franz Liszt, I could be the lead singer of Franz Ferdinand, just to through in an anachronism! :-)
- John
